Circus imagery is strong and evocative of many things in both adults and children. Ceramic artist Ellen Appleby remembers going to the circus as a child, and loved the clowns, acrobats and jugglers.
Her exhibition “It’s All About Balance” at the Harbourside Gallery, Noosa Marina, is about circus performers, but with a twist, as the playful sculptures are also about balance. Circus performers think about balance all the time as it is matter of immediate survival for them. Likewise, balance permeates all our personal and physical lives, the life of our planet and the survival of animals and plants within its eco-systems.
Throughout her life Ellen has had strong connections to circus. She was a costume designer for the People’s Circus in New Zealand, producer of children’s street parades for festivals, as a circus skills trainer in Ian Reece’s circus for young people (Kids R Us) and in schools working with teachers and children. She has just discovered her cousins came from the UK to set up the Sole Brothers (later to become Ashton’s) Circus in Australia in the early 1900s.
Everyone is welcome from the 1st to 30th of April to view this delightful exhibition.
Meet the artist and enjoy some wine and cheese at 2.00pm on Saturday 28th April, at the Harbourside Gallery. The Harbourside Gallery proud to promote this exhibition by a local artist.
