DESERT  RAIN  Feb 25 - March 13,2005
Exhibition Opening Friday 25th February 6pm

It's raining indigenous art.

Calling all avid collectors of indigenous art and those who want to put their foot in the water, Noosa Regional Gallery has just scooped a great collection of indigenous art from Central Australia.  The collection entitled Desert Rain and featuring such luminaries as Minnie Pwerle, Lindsay Bird, Gloria Petyarre and Barbara Weir will hit the Noosa Regional Gallery on Friday the 25th of February.

The works portray both traditional and contemporary styles of indigenous art.  Through the changes in design and form depicted throughout this collection one can view the progressive nature and vibrancy of Aboriginal culture, from the traditional motifs and ochre colours of Lindsay Bird's painting to the bold and free-flowing, energetic works of Minnie Pwerle.

The works were brought to Noosa by newly settled resident Lorraine Heslop who has spent the last 12 years in Central Australia.  Lorraine originally trained as an anthropologist and worked extensively in the desert in a community development capacity.  She has an extensive knowledge of the works on exhibition and will be providing a talk during the exhibition about the desert community and links between community and country.

According to Lorraine, 'in the heart of desert when the rains come, a new energy emerges, a vibrant force that renews and creates.  The air is fresh and the pungent smells of wildflowers and fresh native grasses fill the air.  In a similar sense artistic expression in the Indigenous environment has emerged on the Western plain as a new, vibrant artistic force, one that is in a constant state of renewal and change"
