"The Thanes are Back in Town"
Brett Klease, Brad Thomson, Shane Cassidy, Wayne Powrie, Howard Tampling & Fergus Reilly. The last time these boys were on stage together they were the brawling and brooding Thanes in the 'murky magnificence' that was the SRT/Noosa Arts production of Macbeth.
A few months later, in keeping with the SRT policy of "covering all bases", they were the "outta sight" but not "outta mind" stage crew for Hay Fever. Now they are back! Up front, in ya face and as diametrically opposed from Shakespeare and Coward as is humanly possible. Mid-January will see them launch into SRT's latest production - Job's Right. This is a very brave and real look at "tradies" on a job site. In its own right it is also incredibly funny in both the black and white sense of the word. It has been written by renowned coast actor Brett Klease. The fact that Brett has been a house painter for twenty years gives him an insight into the world of "Quotes & Tradies, Cashies & Cartons, Sites & Subbies and good old fashioned hard Yakka". He originally wrote it as a one-act play in 2004 but both he and director Simon Denver realised that from the audience reaction at the Sunshine Coast Drama Festival alone this was the tip of the iceberg. So, here we are a few years later with the full-length version.
So, what's it all about? In a nutshell it's about a social taboo - blokes being blokes on a job site. Men kiss the wife and kids goodbye in the morning, drive off and enter the very male world of a job-site. Over the next 8 hours they are locked into a tribal world where the pack mentality is continually enforcing the pecking order. To survive you bully and are bullied. They then drive home, kiss the wife and kids and sit down to a civilized dinner. Nothing is mentioned or discussed about the real workings of a job site - it's taboo, secret blokes business.
Not that there's any thing enlightening or spiritually uplifting about the play, it just continually reinforces how little we've progressed since we came out of caves. What gives the play its spark of genius is the fact that this is not an exaggerated work, it's a random slice of real life, and on that level it will outrage more than a few of the audience. Wives will probably dismiss it as fantasy because their beloved husband would "never behave like that". The Arts fraternity will see it as a brave and confrontational work; the general audience will see it as new and exciting. But to the average "tradie" it will be just like another day at work and probably fail to see what the hoo-ha is all about.
Oh, by the way, it really does contain a heap of bad language, in fact in contains gratuitous, obscene, obsessive, rude and bad language. So be warned - it's just like real life.
