It's not often an Australian Buddhist teacher is asked to lecture on happiness to students in Bhutan, a tiny Himalayan kingdom where every government policy is assessed for its impact on Gross National Happiness.

However in 2009 Renate Ogilvie was invited by the Prime Minister of Bhutan to give a series of talks to high school students on Buddhism and happiness.

Born in Germany, Ogilvie is a philosopher and therapist, has been a literary editor and hospice director and is a director of the World Happiness Forum.

This month Renate Ogilvie is visiting the Sunshine Coast to present a weekend workshop on karma, something she sees as both an individual and collective responsibility.

"Like gravity, karma works even if we don't believe in it," Ogilvie said.

"The Buddha taught that all actions of body, speech and mind have inevitable consequences. In these times of "ethics lite" we are often like sleepwalkers teetering on the brink of an abyss and need to remind ourselves of this basic condition.

"The karmic fall-out from our virtuous and non-virtuous actions will follow us as surely as our shadow follows us wherever we go; we need to be as precise as possible about the true motivation behind everything we do, say or even think.

"While we create bad karma through actually doing things, we will also incur it when we fail to resist evil, unskillful action and injustice.

"Standing by when horrific things are planned and executed is just not good enough. We should remember that when it comes to our own stance in our increasingly complex world, where human and civil rights are under constant attack."
