Years eight and nine students from Kawana Waters State College
will take to the water this week to compete in the school’s first
Kayak and Paddling Regatta to be held at Lake Kawana on Friday 23
Secondary Campus Principal Kirsten Ferdinands said the students will be hoping to impress Australian Institute of Sport representatives who often come along to these types of events to scout for talent.
“The regatta is a great opportunity for budding young athletes and who knows; perhaps the next ‘Clint Robinson’ is amongst our students just waiting to be discovered!”
“Our first regatta is also a terrific opportunity for parents and friends to come along and learn more about our Aquatics Excellence Program, so I invite everyone to join in the fun this morning,” she said.
The event will kick off at 8.45am with approximately 50 students expected to compete against their peers in a variety of 200m events including board paddling, surf skiing and kayaking in all three TK1, TK2 and K1 disciplines.
Coaching clinics will also form part of the regatta, to be run by representatives and coaches from nearby kayak and surf lifesaving clubs including demonstrations from local athletes.
