Butter Factory beats to Afro-Caribbean drums

The Butter Factory Arts Centre at Cooroy will pulse to the sound of Afro-Caribbean beats on Saturday 23 May when a percussion workshop takes over the art space.

The Lamakina Rhythm Factory percussion workshop, led by Jalberto Maldonado, is a chance to learn new techniques and discover or improve percussion skills through fun and authentic rhythms.

Sunshine Coast Regional Council's Community Policy and Programs portfolio holder Councillor Jenny McKay said Jalberto is well known to many on the Sunshine Coast.

"He is a highly respected musician, performer and teacher and has been organising multicultural events on the Coast for 15 years," Cr McKay said.

"Many people will remember the popular Noosa Vista Social Club events held at the Butter Factory a few years ago, and more recently Jalberto received a Regional Arts Development Fund grant to record the Big Bara Boom Beating System CD."

Jalberto said that playing the drums, whether solo or with a group of people, relieves stress and increases vitality.

"Drumming affects us in profoundly uplifting ways. This is why people all over the world have drummed in some form or another throughout history. In the past few years, studies conducted in hospitals and universities have documented the health benefits and healing aspects of drumming," Jalberto said.

"And drumming is fun -- it's a great way to feel the pure joy of being alive. Drumming with others is a time-honoured way to create a feeling of community and trust. Drumming is one of life's many great gifts."

Jalberto will be leading two drumming/percussion sessions on Saturday 23 May at the Butter Factory Arts Centre.

The Lamakina Rhythm Factory percussion workshop will run from 10am to noon, and is open to anyone over 15 years of age with any skill level. Cost is $15 and the workshop will be followed by a guided jam session from 1pm-3pm.

Participants are advised to bring their own percussion instruments such as congas, djembe, snare, shakers, floor toms, cow bells or drum kit.

Places are limited so please book as soon as possible on 5447 6882, email or call into Design Works Galleria, Maple Street, Cooroy.
