A 28km river trail linking beach to bush will be launched 9.30am, Saturday 14 August at Lake Dunethin, providing improved access to the river for kayaks and canoes.
Mayor Bob Abbot will join Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, Stirling Hinchliffe to officially open the new trail head at Lake Dunethin, which includes a new jetty and pontoon, disability compliant pathways from the road to the launch area, information signage, improved parking and road improvements.
Mayor Abbot said the trail gives better access to the Maroochy River for paddlers and includes special infrastructure that caters for those with a disability.
"We live in a beautiful place here on the Sunshine Coast, and this trail just makes it easier for everyone to get out and enjoy it," he said
Major Projects Portfolio holder Councillor Debbie Blumel said that the Sunshine Coast Council had committed $70000 to the project.
"The trail will be a real boost for tourism as well as creating a great recreational opportunity for those who live on the Coast," Cr Blumel said.
"Anyone interested in getting out on the water and exploring the new trail can pick up an information brochure from the river trail website, which goes live from 13 August."
The trail starts on the North Maroochy River, near Yandina then heads downstream and east through the varied and natural and agricultural landscapes of the Ninderry/Dunethin Rock district before passing Coolum Creek.
It then turns south past Marcoola, Bli Bli and Pacific Paradise and finally east into the Maroochydore Reach towards Cotton Tree at the river mouth.
The Maroochy River Trail is part of a five year, $8.8million commitment from the Queensland Government for the development of three regional trails in South East Queensland.
