Lou is the third feature length film by Australian director and screenwriter, Belinda Chayko, who seems to bring forth a new film once every ten years, and is partly based on Chayko's experiences with an uncle who had Alzheimer's disease.

11 year old Louise, known as Lou (Lily Bell-Tindley), lives with her 27 year old mother Rhia (Emily Barclay), and two younger sisters Leanne (Charlie-Rose MacLennan), and Lani (Eloise MacLennan), in a house in northern NSW, which is surrounded by cane farms.

The idyllic setting however belies the difficulties confronting the family.

Dad is gone, having taken off some months earlier, leaving the family to make do without him. The well rehearsed routine they execute when debt collectors knock at the door illustrates just how dire their situation has become. A little hope presents itself -- financially -- though, when the family is asked to temporarily care for Lou's paternal grandfather, Doyle (John Hurt).

Doyle is afflicted with Alzheimer's disease, but desperate for the accompanying carer's payment, Rhia agrees to take him in, underestimating however the scope of the task of looking after someone with his condition. Not only is his behaviour unpredictable, but he is prone to frequent memory lapses, and the occasional aggressive outburst.

His arrival incenses Lou though. Already upset she has to spend the summer holidays babysitting her two sisters, she quickly realises she will be expected to provide the bulk of Doyle's care, as Rhia is away at work all day. And the fact that Doyle believes Lou is the younger self of his beloved deceased wife Annie, only adds to Lou's resentment.
