The Maroochydore Surf Lifesaving Club will celebrate its 100th birthday on January 1, 2016 with a family beach party, the launch of the Club Centenary History Book and the unveiling of the Time Capsule which is being placed in a cylinder near Maroochydore Beach.

The Club was formed at a public meeting on January 1, 1916 in a Salvation Army tent at the Cotton Tree Camping Reserve. On January 2 1916, in its first day of surf patrols, 5 rescues were performed and one patient needed to be resuscitated. The Maroochydore patrol members received a Royal Humane Society Award for these rescues.

Maroochydore SLSC has a proud history of service which has seen it rise to the status of World Champion Club in 2000 and 2002. But today the Club patrols are still doing what they first did on 2 January 1916; keep the Maroochy River mouth and Maroochydore Beach safe for our community and our visitors.

Ralph Devlin is the President of Surf Life Saving Queensland and a Life Member of Maroochydore SLSC. Ralph has been a member of the Club since 1971 and is the author of the Centenary History Book which will be launched on the Clubs 100th anniversary.

Ralph said “I am proud to be associated with this great Surf Club, the second established in Queensland. The writing of the Centenary History has been a 10 year project. The History is a story about our Club and our Community which we can all enjoy”.

Club members, locals, tourist, young and old can visit the club from 2pm to see Mayor Mark Jamieson and State Member Fiona Simpson MP launch the centenary book and unveil the time capsule. The Club’s Centenary Birthday Beach Party will begin at 3pm with live entertainment, lots of free kids’ activities, food and drink stalls and a spectacular fireworks display later in the evening.

Club President Stephen Wieland said, “We want it to be a great day for Club Members and our many Supporters. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate with us”.

We look forward to celebrating this historic occasion with the Sunshine Coast.
