Mike Stasse has turned 1 ½ acres at Cooran, which once only grew grass, into a self-sufficient, sustainable, permaculture property.
In about 2003 Mike and Glenda Stasse moved to Cooran on an east/west facing vacant block with no house, but with a wonderful view of Mount Cooroy.
Since that time Mike has designed and built their house, which requires little or no cooling in summer or heating in winter to stay a pleasant temperature all year round. Solar panels provide an income and he has used off-the-shelf as well as innovative ideas to make the house as sustainable as possible.
Outside there is a large permaculture garden and vegie patch, chooks, ducks, and even goats, that provide milk, which means their own homemade cheese. The use of grey water, composting systems and swales means they hardly ever have to water the garden and all the fertiliser needed is produced on site.
