19 May 2005 Miniature art works up for auction
It might not have the profile of a Sotheby's auction but Caloundra Regional Art Gallery's biennial miniatures auction is an event art lovers should not miss.
Caloundra City Acting Mayor, Gordon Wallace, said with more than 50 art works up for grabs, this is a great opportunity for residents to secure some local art work, while also supporting the Gallery.
The auction, which is organised by the Friends of the Gallery, will raise money for items needed by the Gallery, including lighting equipment and stackable chairs.
"Council prides itself on this state-of-the-art facility, which ensures local residents can view some of the most outstanding exhibitions on offer in this country," Cr Wallace said.
"And it is thanks to the hard work of the Friends of the Gallery, that we are able to continue to maintain the facility as a Category A gallery."
Gallery Director, John Waldron, said the artworks going to auction, which range from true miniatures through to medium sized works, include everything from paintings and sculptures to textiles.
"Most of the contributing artists are local and the auction will include pieces from Olga Garner, Eugene Sitcheff and Roland Nancarrow," Mr Waldron said.
"Previous auctions have enabled us to buy many much-needed items including a multi media data projector, marquee, display cabinet and signage."
The auction will be held at the Gallery on Sunday May 29 at 1pm. Works are now on display in the gallery foyer cabinets and items can be viewed from 10am on the day.
