Brisbane residents fight against breast cancer with Australia's largest fun run
Australia's largest annual charity fun run-walk, the Mothers Day Classic, is heading to Southbank Parklands on Mothers Day, May 11 2008.
Over the past decade the Mothers Day Classic has raised more than $3 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation's research program, thanks to the tireless efforts of its organisers, the Women In Super group.
This year's Brisbane event kicks off on Sunday May 11 at Southbank's Cultural Forecourt, with a 4km run, 8km run and 4km and 8km walk following a scenic route along Southbank Parklands and the Brisbane River.
Participants will be running the course with celebrities including Olympic gold medalist swimmer Duncan Armstrong and Commonwealth Games marathon silver medalist Krishna Stanton, who are proud Mothers Day Classic Ambassadors.
Brisbane MDC organiser Jan Bray said participating is a great way to pay tribute to those who have battled breast cancer as well as to support those who strive towards its cure. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australian women and it is estimated that almost 13,300 will be diagnosed this year.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation is Australia's only independent, not-for-profit community organisation funding research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.
So come along and join more than 40,000 other Australians who will take part in the event this Mothers Day. Warm-up aerobics will prepare participants to perform at their peak, and a one-minute of silence will be held to remember those who have lost their fight with breast cancer.
And it's not all exercise! There will be a free showbag for each participant, entertainment, loads of kid's activities and fantastic prizes to be won. If you can't participate, you can still help this great cause by logging on to the website and making a donation.
