Nineteen year old Ella Brown, will be competing at the Murphy Homes 40 Maroochy Classic Carnival on Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st January. This will be her first event after completing her Kellogg’s Nurti-Grain Ironwoman series. Ella is sitting 7th out of 18 after completing 4 rounds of the series, with the 5th & 6th round being held on the 16th & 17th of January at North Cronulla Beach, NSW.
Brown said “She is looking forward to racing on her home beach. It’s always thrilling to race in front of family, friends and the young nippers from Maroochydore. I love competing at Maroochydore beach and challenging myself in the tricky conditions on offer. We train here every day of the week and the surf is always different and is always making you think.”
“This will be the first major short course iron woman race of the season and will attract a lot of the big names. The opportunity to race here prior to the Aussies can’t be missed. It will be a good indication of how my preparation is going and what I need to improve on. I can’t thank the club and sponsors enough for putting on this event.” Brown said.
Nathan Greig the Head Coach at Maroochydore SLSC said “This carnival is a great opportunity for athletes to test themselves against quality opposition and get a gauge of where they are at leading into the championship events. Racing at Maroochydore will give athletes valuable race experience prior to the Aussies.”
“Maroochydore always provides testing conditions for athletes and makes wonderful viewing for spectators. It’s a highly anticipated carnival and loved by the athletes for the testing conditions on offer.” Greig said.
The Murphy Homes 40 Maroochy Classic Carnival has been running for 5 successful years with a great partnership between Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club and Murphy Homes/Builders.
This year’s event promises to be bigger and better with a prize pool of $40,000. It is the biggest club run carnival and has the largest prize money for a single event. It is expected to bring some big name athletes as this year’s event is the lead up to the Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships being held on March 18th to 20th at North Burleigh SLSC, Gold Coast and the National Surf Lifesaving Championships running from April 16th to April 25th at Maroochydore, Mooloolaba & Alexandra Headland.
The carnival will be run both Saturday and Sunday starting at 8am with twilight beach events being run on the Saturday night. You can watch the events from the beach or our clubhouse. There will be a BBQ and refreshments available.
