My Music, My Life By Kamahl
My Music, My Life, is about the music and the people that created “Kamahl”, out of one Kandiah Kamalesvaran, who arrived in Adelaide in the winter of 1953.
Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to still be here 60 years later. Had it not been for the concern and kindness of two people in particular; the immigration official, Bill Schneider, and the registrar of the Adelaide
University, Harry Wesley-Smith, I would have been back in Malaysia as a singing tour guide, driving a bus.
It all began on a Saturday night at the home of the Morcombes in St Morris. Gladys Morcombe, who had a heart as big as a house, regularly opened her doors to Asian students who were far from home. 4O Adelaide Festival Centre Celebrating 4O years ozasiafestival.com.au
It was on one of those weekends in 1954 – and I still can’t believe it – I somehow found the courage; in spite of my chronic insecurity, shocking nerves, and an overwhelming feeling of inferiority, to stand up and sing, with the lights turned off, in the ridiculous belief that I wouldn’t be recognised if I made an idiot of myself. It was the affectionate response that made me believe, that through words and music, I might find acceptance, somehow, someway, someday.
That song, the first I ever learned, was Nature Boy. It was made famous by my idol, Nat King Cole. The final lines of it ‘The greatest thing you’ll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return’ has been my mantra ever since. Adelaide is where it all began; My Music, My life.
