Students getting wheelie excited about - National Ride2School Day
Students at local schools will be gearing up to join schools across the country taking part in National Ride2School Day on Wednesday 25 March.
Ride2School Day is an opportunity for students to combine exercise with getting to school. Parents and teachers at local schools are urged to leave the car at home and get students walking, riding, skating or scootering to school.
Integrated Transport Systems portfolio holder Councillor Vivien Griffin, along with Travelsmart Sunshine Coast, is encouraging all local schools to get involved, and reminding parents, that 'part way is okay'.
"If you live too far from the school to walk or cycle, then park 1km from the school and walk or ride from there. This in turn reduces traffic congestion and improves safety for all families in the school precinct".
"Don't forget to check your children's bike tyres - it will make the ride a whole lot easier and more enjoyable with tyres that are fully inflated!"
"We are encouraging all schools to take part in National Ride2School Day because it's an easy and fun way to promote riding and walking to school. One day a week makes a difference".
Bicycle Victoria, organisers of the national event have reported that Ride2School Day 2008 was such a huge success resulting in 559 schools with enrolments of over 200,000 students registering to take part in the largest ever national celebration of walking and riding to school.
Ride2School is well on the way to changing the active travel habits of students with schools registered in the program already getting 45% of their students walking or riding to school. That's 2 and a half times the national average.
