The second of our spring saturday sessions will have us retreat to the cool dappled glade of the belli creek. This special site offers us a rare opportunity to explore, up close and in detail, the interaction between human and natural environments, the concept of biomimicry and the principles of engineering and architecture. Together through a leafy doorway, a wild world unfolds.
Curling roots, river rocks, sun flecked pools and mossy logs to tempt our feet. turning our faces towards the sun, a huge bridge of concrete spans the creek and fills our view. Exploring the concrete underbelly, there many opportunities to build our natureweaver's awareness of the human impacts on the ecology and systems of this wildspace. we ponder - what's happening here? what has happened to the water flow here? how have the creatures adapted to life under the bridge? Could there have been a better way to grow this bridge? How does it make you feel? The children will have many answers....and many more questions, too! So much to consider, to feel and to know. we then turn our faces to the shady green places once more.
We follow the creek bed back to the where the windy tree roots, rocky shores, still water and gentle green light hold us. Here in this wildspace there are bridges of the natural kind - fallen trees criss cross the creek as far as the eye can see. What's happening here? how does it make you feel? the same questions to explore - we wonder if we will hear the same answers from our natureweavers? here the children will create their own bridges, utilising the principles of biomimicry and engineering we have been exploring in this session, using the elements we find onsite - mud, water, stone, grasses, sticks, pods.
Perhaps they shall utilise the magnificent twisted root systems of the trees along this creek bed? engineers and architects they shall be, consiously choosing to weave natures patterns and pathways. This will be a a deeply creative session, with real life applications in a local sunshine coast wildspace - what a treat for our children! our second whittlers session will follow, from 1-2.30pm also in the dappled shade beside the cool of belli creek. please see the attached for further information.
