Buderim's 45 year old Craft Cottage enjoys iconic status on the Sunshine Coast. The Cottage’s next exhibition, “Needles Knots and Nibs”, holds plenty of promise for those interested in contemporary and traditional applications of the crafts of calligraphy, machine embroidery, wool and fibre crafts. The Exhibition, combined with demonstrations throughout the weekend of 5th and 6th May, will include a special display of four quilts to be donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Machine applique, and adaptations of the very old techniques of sashiko (“little stabs”), and redwork (named after the red cotton originally used) are among the embroidery styles used in the work on display.
The Cottage's Spinners and Weavers plan to “Yarn Bomb” the Cottage gardens with knitted graffiti, but will also be displaying more serious examples of their craftmanship, including feltwork, knitted and crocheted pieces, and “freeform” pieces in which knitted and fibre sections are assembled in a collage. The Calligraphy Group's “Shared Book” on which several calligraphers collaborated, and a wall of calligraphy Biblical Quotations are other highlights of the exhibition.
The Exhibition takes place on the weekend of the “Back to Buderim” celebration, which is a key event in the town's 150th Anniversary program. The Cottage Calligraphy Group designed and produced a Buderim 150 souvenir teatowel which has been a popular money raiser in support of community projects, and the teatowels will be on sale at the exhibition.
The Cottage's website www.buderimcraftcottage.com.au is worth visiting if you are interested in seeing examples of fine craftmanship across many disciplines, including calligraphy, embroidery, patchwork, sculpture, fabric art, painting, fibre crafts, silversmithing, or if you are interested in learning these crafts.
