New Orleans Musicians Benefit

Friday, 14th October

On Friday 14th October a major benefit concert and auction will be held at Freshwater Restaurant and Studio, BreakFree Noosa International Resort.

A few entertainers had been discussing the possibility of a benefit and charity options, and well-known Sunshine Coast Entertainer Barry Charles received information from his sister, Joy Belle (A New York resident of 22 years). The Jazz Foundation and sister organisation New Orleans Musicians Clinic (N.O.M.C.) are directly involved helping hundreds of musicians who are displaced from the devastating aftermath of Cyclone Katrina.

Over 150 musicians in Lafayette district alone are displaced without any possessions, and many still have no whereabouts of family or friends. Some of the musicians are older and dealing with unbelievable situations with nine people to a room, and no cooking facilities. Some musicians can't leave shelters as they fear they will not find missing family members if relocated somewhere else, and have no instrument to support themselves.

The Jazz Foundation is receiving grants and funding to pay these musicians to perform, and N.O.M.C. are raising money to replace instruments to those in need. Organisers are hoping to raise $20,000 to for the purchase of instruments for some of the musicians who have lost everything.

From 6pm entertainers and various well-known acts are giving their talents freely to those who come and support this cause. Herb Johnson (Louis Armstrong's great grandson), Barry Charles and Clint Francis are among a few guest performers. At 8pm an auction will be held, with donations of goods and services from supporting individuals and businesses. Freshwater Restaurant, and Studio will be donating their profits for the day, and some entertainers who want to support the night but have other commitments are donating their night's wages.

Minimum entry donation is twenty dollars.

Any individual or business wanting to donate goods or services for this benefit, or otherwise can contact James Warner on 54475900, or 0400275514.
