9 February 2006  New policy for footpath dining in Maroochy

Diners and pedestrians share many of the most scenic and amenable footpaths in Maroochy, and both parties have rights when it comes to enjoying this public space.

Maroochy Mayor, Joe Natoli, said Council was committed to ensuring that all footpath users have equal and open access to Maroochy's footpaths.

"Maroochy Council has developed a Draft Footpath Dining and Trading Policy to help better address these needs, and is holding public forums across the Shire to discuss the draft policy and to seek feedback from the community," Cr Natoli said.

Public forums will be held at various times in Nambour, Maroochydore, Coolum and Mooloolaba between mid and late February.

Division 11 Councillor Tom Hulett said the development of this policy will make the rules and charges surrounding footpath dining and trading much clearer and more equitable.

"In the past, footpath dining and trading has been developed on an ad hoc basis.  We've identified that policy guidelines are required to assist Council staff, affected businesses and the general community," Cr Hulett said.

Division 10 Councillor Mick Hourigan said specific footpath dining precincts had been identified and charges had been reduced. He said a clearer definition of pedestrian access had been developed and the onus of responsibility for cleanliness of these areas had been outlined.

"The proposed policy addresses the needs of all footpath users," Cr Hourigan said. "However, we need to be sure that all perspectives have been considered, and that is why community input and feedback on this draft policy is essential."
