Berne-based schoolteacher Raimund Gregorius, JEREMY IRONS, prevents a young woman from committing suicide - she runs off leaving behind her coat which contains a book in Portugese. Fortunately, if improbably, Gregorius reads Portugese and he becomes so intrigued with the autobiographical story of resistance against the Salazar dictatorship in the 70s that he abandons his job - leaving his students in the lurch - and heads for Lisbon where he attempts to locate the book's author. Instead he finds the writer's sister, CHARLOTTE RAMPLING, and one of his former colleagues in the resistance, TOM COURTENAY, who is the uncle of a friendly optician, MARTINA GEDECK.
