Kiera Bascombe - Mooloolaba Nippers

Nippers is an Australian institution, a great way for kids to learn water safety, get outside and enjoy this glorious place we all call home, the Sunshine Coast. Mooloolaba Nippers sign on is Sunday 21st August 2016 and the club would like to welcome all families, old and new.  So put down that IPad and come and sign up for a summer of fun, fitness and friendships.

Nippers and Junior Lifesavers is the breeding ground for the life savers of the future and with summer just around the corner, volunteers at local club Mooloolaba are pitching in to make it the best season yet.

Nippers caters for kids aged 5 to 13 years old and Mooloolaba also have set up a cadets program for 14-17year old’s.  The focus for Nippers is fun, and surf awareness and it’s a great way for the whole family to enjoy the glorious Sunshine Coast beaches that are right on our doorstep.

“Being a member of Mooloolaba is not just about the children” Nippers Chairman Mark Taber says “It’s about being part of a family team, a community, enjoying long, sunny days at the beach, barbeques with friends and keeping fit”.

New families may not realise is that nippers training is not just available on Sundays – there are programs running most days that are all included in the very low cost family membership fee.  Aside from the obvious board riding and swimming programs, Nippers offers the chance to get sprint coaching, 1 and 2km run training, volley ball, first aid, beach awareness and a host of social opportunities including Mooloolaba’s famous weekly Wednesday night barbeque, that saves a nights cooking!

While some young children find the sea daunting at first, with gentle guidance and coaching it’s so refreshing to see them develop into really competent teens with strong social and community awareness ethics.  It’s a great bonus for kids when they apply for a new school or job to be able to show that they already have proven experience in a responsible role.

The little green caps, a program for 5-7 year old’s, introduces kids to the beach, teaches them about waves and the basics of water safety, in a safe and caring environment.   The 8-13s gain a variety of water skills and this year Mooloolaba has a host of specialised, volunteer coaches lined up to take the helm.  And of course – in terms of location – where else would you rather be!
