Never heard Carmina Burana? Well you'll probably instantly recognise the opening from a recent very funny, popular ad for Carlton Draught Beer called 'It's a Big Ad'. Of course, the words are different but this ad captures the rhythmic drive and excitement of the music. Go to www.youtube.com and put 'a big ad' in the search field. Play the video clip and see for yourself.
Carmina Burana is the most widely known and popular orchestral piece of music written this century and Noosa Chorale and Noosa Sinfonia will be giving you the opportunity of hearing not just a snippet but the whole of this musical masterpiece on 17 and 18 May. This will be a stunning and breathtaking musical experience. With a choir of 70, an orchestra of 40 musicians, with two grand pianos, magnificent soloists and Adrian King conducting, the immediacy and vibrancy of hearing this work in the Bicentennial Hall will be unforgettable.
The thrill of listening to Carmina Burana will be matched by listening to one of the most popular ground breaking works of this century. In Rhapsody in Blue, Gershwin broke all the conventions and composed a piece that blended features of classical music and jazz. Originally written for piano and jazz band, you will hear the acclaimed version for piano and symphony, which was played on February 10, 2008 at the 50th Grammy Awards.
The concert also includes well-loved songs from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess: "Summertime", "I've Got Plenty of Nothing" and "Bess You is My Woman Now".
The concert features outstanding soloists. Max Olding AM will play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Max is recognised internationally as a pianist of high reputation and has performed widely as a recitalist and as a conductor.
Baritone, Hans-Georg Wimmer, established his career in Europe as a profound interpreter of the music of the 17th and 18th century. He was invited regularly to the most important ancient music Festivals and has performed regularly as a soloist with Musica Antiqua Cologne under the leadership of Reinhard Goebel. He is becoming a very well known singer at concerts on the Sunshine Coast.
Soprano, Louise Kennedy, who has sung in opera houses in Australia and abroad in Berlin, Spain, Italy, South Africa, Switzerland and Holland, and popular counter tenor, Ron Morris, round out this array of talent.
The concert and forty piece orchestra will be under the direction of Adrian King. Adrian has established his reputation on the Coast in a very short time for conducting exciting and beautiful choral concerts. He received his musical training at the Guildhall School of Music, London and has conducted many great choral works, including thrilling performances at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
This is a concert to be enjoyed by lovers of all kinds of music, not only classical music lovers. If you are a jazz fan, you'll love it. Even if you are a heavy metal fan, you'll love it! If you have never been to an orchestral music concert, this is a great one to start with.
Noosa Chorale is very grateful to Morris Brothers Music Store for freely providing the grand pianos for these concerts.
