Community Music Festival

The Noosa Community Music Festival on Sunday October 13 with music from Oka, Harii Bandhu and others will help give a new voice to Brett Dillon, 35, who has not been able to communicate for five years. Tewantin-Noosa Lions Club has organised the free event, featuring Oka, Harii Bandhu, Gabor, Michelle Brown and other Sunshine Coast performers who have volunteered their time to raise money to buy a communication device for Brett, a former A grade polo player who fell from his horse while helping another rider.

Brett suffered a brain injury and now has locked-in syndrome – he has normal brain function but can not eat, speak or move his head, limbs and body. His only way of communicating is to move his left thumb and wink his eye. The device, which costs more than $10,000, will enable Brett to communicate with his family and friends for the first time in five years.

The Community Music Festival in Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, 10am to 3pm, will have a carnival atmosphere with jumping castles, face painting, market stalls, food, the Lions food van, raffles and Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club’s junior sailors will run sailing trips for a donation. You can bid on a silent auction with great items including luxury overnight accommodation and breakfast for two people at Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa and Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort; accommodation, breakfast and a three-course dinner for two at RACV Noosa Resort; half-day offshore fishing charter from U-Drive; barbecue from Bunnings plus more (please bring cash as no Eftpos facilities available, although the yacht club next to the park has a cash card machine).

A SILENT auction with some amazing items up for bidding is being organised by the Tewantin-Noosa Lions Club, organisers of the Community Music Festival to be held next Sunday, October 13, in Lions Park Noosaville.

Jacqui Nichols, Tewantin Noosa Lions secretary said, “This auction is a new development in the club’s targeted effort to fund a custom communication device that will allow Brett Dillon to once again ‘have a voice’, and is made possible by the amazing sponsorship of local businesses.

There will be a Silent Auction Gazebo at Lions Park Noosaville on the day of the festival for people to register their bids.

“An example of just some of the items donated for the auction are:

• Accommodation and breakfast at The Sheraton, Outrigger for two
• Accommodation at RACV for two and breakfast plus a three course dinner
• Half Day Offshore fishing charter from U-Drive
• BBQ from Bunnings

“The dollars raised from the Silent Auction will go to the Fundraiser for Brett and be a big boost if we get the support.”

Businesses interested in offering items for the Silent Auction and anyone interested in offering support for the Community Music Festival is encouraged to contact Jacqui Nichols via email or phone Tewantin Noosa Lions secretary Gus Hatter on (07)5474 4152. Please lend your support by donating or volunteering to this wonderful cause in any way possible, please see the email address and phone numbers listed in this paragraph for more information, any help is greatly appreciated.

Brett is one of six young residents at Wesley Care Tewantin, a supported residence community in the Noosa region, funded by Disability Services Queensland and run by Wesley Mission Brisbane. The Lions Club is seeking donations of funds to help with the festival’s operating costs, vouchers for raffles, and interested stallholders – please phone Jacqui on 0417 630 842.

The club supports Wesley Care Tewantin which opened in November 2012 and is the only purpose-built home on the Sunshine Coast for young disabled people with high-care needs. The residents have 24-hour care and support from registered nurses, carers, therapy assistants, activities coordinator and a qualified chef.
