Innovative event organizers USM EVENTS have come up with a three in one deal sure to please swim, bike, run enthusiasts. It's the ideal winter getaway combining three of your favourite events into one weekend -- Noosa Blue Water Swim, Noosa Century Cycle and Noosa Running Festival on 22-23 May 2010.

USM EVENTS General Manager Geoff Meyer said the merging of these three popular events means competitors now don't have to choose between them, instead they are able to take part in the Noosa Blue Swim on Saturday and either the Noosa Century Cycle or one of the three distances in the Noosa Running Festival.

"Previously these events were held across different months making it a costly exercise for those looking to compete in the winter months or forcing them to choose.

"It now provides a fantastic weekend option for everyone and another great promotion for the region as part of Mayfiesta," said Mr Meyer.

Noosa provides the perfect setting and climate for this winter weekend. The inaugural Noosa Winter Festival will transform the beach and streets into a vibrant, exciting event attracting thousands of participants and spectators.

The traditional events for the Noosa Blue Water Swim will remain the same. Competitors still have the chance to compete in either the 2km, 1km or 500m distances. The Noosa Running Festival will also be offering the same events -- 21.1km, 10km or 5km run/walk.

All three events attract competitors from interstate while the local community has been a tremendous supporter. Event organizers are tipping this weekend to attract upwards of 5,000 competitors in its inaugural year.

If you liked the Brisbane to Noosa Century, you will love the new Noosa Century Cycle. Starting in the heart of Noosa Heads and taking in the best the Sunshine Coast has to offer, this event will surely not disappoint. The option of 100miles (160km) or 100km courses, takes in the hinterland townships of Pomona, Cooroy and Eumundi, the challenging accents will be far outweighed by the spectacular vistas.  The gut wrenching climbs are rewarded with views of the North Shore and Frazer Island down to the base of the coast line.

After leaving Eumundi you proceed south toward Yandina and flow through the undulating and picturesque farmland to Bli Bli, where the salt in the air becomes stronger. Finally you hit the sea and if the gods are smiling it will be a southerly, which will help push you along the coast home through Marcoola over the last major climb at Coolum. With the inviting ocean constantly on your right, the last stretch is flat to undulating but could feel like mountains depending on the strength left in the legs, a quick detour around the back of Noosa to the grand finish on Noosa Parade, where food, refreshments, entertainment and maybe a massage await. We don't promise it will be easy but we can promise it will be worth it.

Another feature of the weekend will be the Scody Teams Challenge. Teams of 2 or 3 will have the choice to battle it out in either the Long Course Team Challenge or the Short Course Team Challenge.

There is also an option for clubs, groups and organizations who wish to enter a team to go into the draw for the Scody largest team.

The Noosa Winter Festival (NWF) is a new initiative to the USM EVENTS schedule in 2010 and will bring together eight popular sporting events on one weekend. The Festival will see three existing stand alone and established events -- Noosa Blue Water Swim, Century Bike Ride and Noosa Running Festival - merge on the weekend of 22-23rd May in what will be promoted as an ultimate weekend of swimming, biking and running in the picturesque setting and idyllic weather conditions of Noosa in winter.

The two-day multi-sport Festival is expected to draw more than 5,000 participants and 15,000 spectators across the weekend, with a Festival village based out of the Noosa Heads Lions Park featuring a sport and lifestyle expo, live bands and entertainment, food vendors, and a program of activities. The design of the Festival with its mix of events caters for competitors of all abilities and ages, providing the 'ultimate' weekend winter escape.

Noosa Winter Festival Updates:

USM EVENTS, organizers of the inaugural Noosa Winter Festival bringing together three of our favourite winter events have also added an entertainment program that will ensure this is the ultimate sporting and lifestyle winter weekend.

With an extensive entertainment program planned for both days at Festival Village, located in Noosa Heads Lions Park there is the opportunity for participants, supporters and the local community to soak up the atmosphere while strolling through the Expo, watching the amazing stunt bike displays, enjoy the sounds of Nick Latta, watch the Stand Up Paddle and Taplin Relay competition while the kids can enjoy the jumping castle and face painting.

The Hot 91.1 Noosa Sport and Lifestyle Expo will include over 25 exhibitors featuring a huge range of sporting equipment, supplements, apparel and technical equipment. Grab a bargain, test drive equipment, sample products or just window shop.

The riders from The ExpressiveBikes Bike Trials Demo Team will demonstrate the ultimate in bike handling. With amazing balance and nerves of steel they will hop and jump their bikes over a collection of man-made obstacles. Be amazed by what is possible on 2 wheels. There is also a bike maintenance demonstration provided by Cognition so you can ensure your bike is in top working order.

One of the highlights will be the '1000 Flat SUP Race', a unique form of Stand up paddleboard racing in Australia. It is a flat 1 km circuit around Witta circle at Noosa Sound and a true test of speed, technique and stamina required for this sport.

There will be a selection of age groups, a Speciality division with open age groups and specific one-design laps will fill up the race card.

To complement the event will be a first of its kind in the stand up paddle world, 'A hot lap' or 'Barrel race' where the competitor will compete to cover a rodeo style barrel race course in the shortest time possible. Simply the winner will be top of the table, the fastest on the day.

Also racing for Surf Lifesaving Taplin Relay glory, competitors from Noosa, Coolum and Peregian Surf Lifesaving Clubs will battle it out on Saturday from 12noon.

On Sunday afternoon be swept away by Nick Latta's unique sounds, the singer-songwriter's ability to recreate stories of life and love are something special.

Having relocated from Sydney Nick is now finding success on the Sunshine Coast.

His humbling experience in winning the King and Queen of Song - original song competition 2008 [and 2009] at Noosa, was a wakeup call for this talented musician.  Receiving a standing ovation for his performance and winning first prize gave Nick a massive confidence boost.

His dreams of building a successful music career will definitely not be compromised in any way to achieve this.  Feeling strongly, he commits to being true to himself and would never pretend to be something he's not in order to sell records.

"What I produce is because of me, not because of what the market wants or what the market will pay for.  [Being true to yourself] is very difficult for musicians but I will never change."

"Music to me, I think, is very important in most people's lives.  And being able to provide good music that they can connect with is a gift that not a lot of people can give", he says.

Even though Nick doubts that he will ever be signed to a record label, he is happy to continue making music, for that is his passion.

The music line up will also feature some emerging rock talent from Noosaville State School.

22 April 2010    Noosa Blue WAter Swim attracts strong fields

With Noosa Mayfiesta celebrations ready to commence there has never been a better time to take a final plunge before winter than being part of this year's Noosa Blue Water Swim.

Now in its seventh year, the Noosa Blue Water Swim, held as part of the inaugural Noosa Winter Festival combining three popular events into the one spectacular weekend. This year event organizer USM EVENTS have taken the bold move to combine three stand alone events -- Noosa Blue Water Swim, Noosa Running Festival and the Century Cycle Ride into one sport and entertainment festival.

USM EVENTS General Manager Geoff Meyer said the merging of these three popular events means competitors now don't have to make a choice between them as they were formally held over three different months.

The Noosa Blue Water swim will be the opening event of the Noosa Winter Festival on Saturday 22 May and continues to win over swimming enthusiasts looking for a great destination event heading into the more temperate season.

On the program this year the Noosa Blue Water 2km Swim from Tea Tree Bay around the headland to Noosa Main Beach and the Zinc 96 1km Swim from Little Cove to Main Beach. If you think those distances are a bit out of your reach then try the 500m Splash and Nipper Challenge along Noosa Main Beach.

An additional option for the Zinc 96 1km Swim is a new category -- the Fin Swim. Competitors can put their flippers on to give them some additional assistance or for those looking to cover the distance a bit quicker.

Due to National Parks and Wildlife restrictions, entries into the 2km event will be strictly limited to comply with these rules.

Entries for this year's event are already strong with participants expected to arrive from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, interstate and across the Sunshine Coast to fill the fields across the three events.

Importantly, the day is designed for fun and participation so there will be lots of random draw prizes given away so everyone has a chance to win. One lucky competitor will walk away the winner of a trip to Fiji courtesy of Pacific Swims. Compete in the Noosa Blue Water 2km Swim or the Zinc 96 1km Swim, place your prize draw ticket in the barrel and be at presentations to win. The prize is valued at $2000 and includes return flights from Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne to Fiji, transfers, 4 night's accommodations at Plantation Island Resort and race entry and functions tickets.

"The Noosa Blue Water Swim continues to grow in popularity with many visitors realising that May is a perfect time to enjoy Noosa and Laguna Bay by competing in the swim and staying on to enjoy the Mayfiesta program," said Diane Ainsworth from Tourism Noosa.

Once again USM EVENTS has chosen to support the Down Syndrome 'Down Under' Swimming Organisation as this year's official event charity.

There's still plenty more to do across the weekend after the swim, a full afternoon's entertainment on Saturday from 12noon at Festival Village, Noosa Lions Park which includes the Hot 91.1 Noosa Sport and Lifestyle Expo to explore.

On Sunday you can then enjoy one of the five options on offer -- Noosa Half Marathon (21.1km), Mizuno Noosa 10km run or the Noosa 5km run/walk. If cycling is your thing, then the Noosa 160km Century Cycle or the Noosa 100km Century Cycle.

A unique chance exists for swimmers looking to improve their technique from one of Australia's best -- John Konrads who now lives in Noosa and has competed each year in the swim.

He rewrote the swimming world record books in the late 1950's and early '60's. John was 15 when he set literally dozens of world records.

Learn the techniques of our champion in just one 3 hour Swim Easy Clinic.

John's famous '7 basic principles' cover the freestyle technique. His stress free methods allow you to make substantial progress through increased efficiency which leads to speed and endurance.

Held at Noosa Blue Resort Pool, Friday 21 May from 2-5pm the clinic includes a DVD, video playback, personalized notes and coffee break. For bookings: Email
