OVER 50 AIRCRAFT ON DISPLAY
The cockpits of some of the world’s greatest flying machines will open to onlookers and aspiring pilots alike. Visitors will enjoy a display of over 50 aircraft ranging from magnificent World War I flying machines to jet fighters. The DC-3 used by General Douglas MacArthur while he was stationed in Australia is among the museum’s most popular exhibits.
Cliff Robinson, President of the QAM said, ‘Over the 35 year history of the QAM the thing visitors appreciate most is freedom to touch the aircraft. During the open cockpit weekend visitors can sit inside a cockpit and get a feel for the conditions pilots flew in. In our mission to preserve Australia’s civilian and military aviation heritage we aim to acquire aircraft representative of our history, but having an all-volunteer organization means we rely on modest entry fees and donations to grow our collection.’
The Open Cockpit Weekend will be held on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July. Open hours are between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. People unable to attend the open cockpit weekend can visit the museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except on Christmas day. Modest entry fees go toward running the museum, maintaining its exhibits and acquiring new aircraft. Guided tours are available, as are school, club and seniors excursions at concessional group rates. The QAM has no paid staff, and enquiries from intending volunteers are welcome.
