An open day for steelpans and steelbands
In conjunction with Matt Davies, who is one of the founders of 'The Pantastic Steelband', Australia's only professional 9 piece steelband, the j is launching a whole new workshop series.
One of the beauties is, that steelpans can be played by anyone and anywhere and the more are joined the better that powerful vibe gets.
A steelband is an ensemble of steelpan instruments ranging from the bass pans up to the tenor pan, which plays the melody. In the same way that a conventional Western orchestra has several stringed instruments covering a wide harmonic range, there are 10 differently tuned pans in the pan family. A band might have as few as 5 players or as many as 150, depending on the steelband's aspirations.
The term steelband culture refers to all the traditions and practices which surround the steelband movement. All around the world, but especially in Trinidad and Tobago, community-based steelbands have very strong ties with their community and are often a focus of much attention and pride. Furthermore there is a global steelband fraternity composed of tens of thousands of "hooked-on-pan" players, most of whom are musically untrained amateurs. They play with passion and fervour because they love their instruments and derive enormous pleasure and satisfaction from being in a steelband. That is steelband culture... and that is what PANSchool hopes to initiate here in Australia.
For the last couple of years Matt Davies who was born and raised in Trinidad has been working towards establishing PANSchool, an organisation whose aim is to raise the profile of steelbands in Australia. PANSchool's immediate goal is to establish steelbands in local communities and schools with a view to developing a steelband culture across Australia.
Anybody curious to know more about these wonderful instruments is invited to come along to PANSchool's "O-pan Session" at 'The J' on Wed. 4th April, from 6.30 pm to learn more about steelpans and steelband culture.
In conjunction with 'The J', PANSchool will be presenting its first program of steelband workshops: the program will consist of 10, 1 ½ hr sessions twice weekly. Previous musical experience is not essential. Anyone interested in joining the workshops or finding out more about them can call Matt on 5471 1165.
