For over 40 years, an Iconic Building sat high on top of Bowen Hills overlooking Brisbane. A venue that could hold over 5,000 people and that was, in Australia, an integral part of the most defining decades of popular music from the birth of Rock’n’Roll to the Punk revolution.
From the late 1940’s to the early 1980’s, Cloudland Ballroom played host to a multitude of National and International acts. The building was The Social Hub of Brisbane.
Greats such as Rock’n’Roll pioneers Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny O’Keefe. Icons including Normie Rowe and the Bee Gees, Legendary Australian Bands Daddy Cool, Ice House, Australian Crawl, Cold Chisel, INXS, Dragon as well as International acts like Madness, Stray Cats, The Clash and UB40 all performed at Cloudland.
The overnight demolition of Cloudland in 1982 stunned not only the residents of Brisbane, but people from all corners of the globe who had attended the venue during its life.
Director, Producer and Performer, Paul Hayman brings you ‘Not Strictly Ballroom’ – The Story of Cloudland. A musical journey through the complete history of this Iconic Building. And factual it is, over 2 years of research was conducted, including interviews with some of the Acts, Musicians and Dancers who performed at the venue.
When asked about the show, Mr. Hayman said; “We all know the saying ‘If the walls could talk’… well, the walls of Cloudland held many a story. The live music scene was in its Prime and many of the bands that played there (Cloudland) have gone onto to become Legendary. In my research on the venue, I found out some interesting facts about many of the bands.”
Paul Hayman’s own vocal talent has been acknowledged by many of his peers in the music industry. During his 15-year career as a Professional Performer, he has shared the stage with some of them. Paul’s individual ability as a performer, combined with his emerging abilities as a
Producer and Director and obvious passion for sharing the story of Cloudland is what showcases the unique structure of this production.
When asked about what makes this show unique? Mr. Hayman explained: “The predominant comment I heard during my interviews in researching Cloudland was; ‘We wish we knew it was going to be torn down, we would have gone and had our last dance there’.
This was the catalyst for me designing a show, where the audience is integrated into the productions stage setting. We authentically recreated the bandstand of Cloudland and then chose venues where we could replicate the Ballrooms dance floor. The idea is to give the audience the experience that they are actually at Cloudland. This unique ‘interactive’ element means they can get up and dance (if they want to) to the live 7-piece band. As you would have, at the original venue.
This 2 ½ hour production also includes beautifully choreographed Dance Showcases in Ballroom, Latin and Rock’n’Roll from Australian Champions and World Representatives Rhett & Emma Salmon and Tyryn & Taylor Curry and Multiple World Champions Glen & Amy Wallace as a fitting tribute to the dance crazes evolving concurrently to the changes in popular music during Cloudland’s life.
Returning after 2 years of touring the Eastern States of Australia, The Events Centre, Caloundra, will become Cloudland for one night only. Don’t miss this special night of Entertainment and Dance encompassed in a high quality and truly unique production…
