Saturday 3 April - 7.30pm Maleny Community Centre, Maple St, Maleny Tropic Sun Collective presents An evening of Theatre
Plays of Nature
Film buffs will recall with relish the name of Playwright/Screenwriter - David Mamet and his brilliant scripts - Winslow Boy, Things Change, Spartan, The Spanish Prisoner, The Edge and Glengarry Glen Ross, his Pulitzer Prize winning play which he updated for the all-star screen adaptation with Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino and Alec Baldwin. Like moths to a flame, great actors gravitate to the singular genius of this creative writer. Mamet's greatest contribution to this particular film is his rich dialogue.
His play, "Duck Variations" to be performed in Maleny Community Centre, Saturday 3 April at 7.30 pm, shows his brilliant observation of character supported by his peerless dialogue. In 14 short conversations between two men sitting on a park bench at the edge of a lake, Mamet contemplates contemporary urban life, but speaks only in terms of the wildlife before the men. He portrays similar patterns between human nature and nature - human societies are modelled on those of our animal friends.
Humour bursts through the episodes covering subjects close to our hearts, conservation, pollution, partnership, leadership, private space and animals in a zoo.
This leads to the second short play by Kafka - "A Report to the Academy" - again looking at the wildlife/human parallel - a stunning theatrical classic.
