Reef Check Australia is a community-based charity that trains recreational divers to monitor coral health on more than 100 sites along the Queensland coast. Here in South East Queensland we organize teams of trained volunteers to monitor almost 30 established sites between Noosa and the Gold Coast.
In order to undertake the training you need to be an Advanced Open Water Diver with 25+ logged dives. To participate on surveys you need to be a trained Rescue Diver (or equivalent) with a minimum of 30 logged dives. Please see http://www.reefcheckaustralia.org/diving-requirements.html for other diving requirements.
The training course itself involves around 6 dives and small class sizes for theory sessions. The course costs $495 or $395 for students, which includes training dive expenses. Our trained surveyors have the opportunity to learn new skills, contribute coral reef conservation efforts and dive on survey teams for free!
