09 December 2005 Residents called to comment on Pest Management Plan
Maroochy Shire Council is taking on the battle against weeds and feral animals with renewed vigour by releasing its draft Maroochy Pest Management Plan 2005-09.
Division One Councillor Greg Rogerson said weeds and feral animals have a significant impact on our environment and on society as well as being the greatest threat to a sustainable rural economy.
"We need to work together with all landholders to defeat this menace which is why we are asking members of the community to tell us their thoughts on our draft Maroochy Pest Management Plan," he said.
Maroochy Shire Council has prepared the draft, which was recently released for public submissions and identifies six desired outcomes of pest management and priority pest species for the Shire.
The draft plan documents some of the successes of current programs established by Maroochy Shire Council that tackle pests and identifies some areas where programs could be expanded or improved.
It also details Council's and other landowners' responsibilities to control declared pests and it provides strategies to deal with environmental weeds and feral animals.
"This is yet another step in our commitment to the environment here in Maroochy Shire," Division Three Councillor Paul Tatton said. "We value our natural assets as one of our top priorities and need to deal with threats like pests in order to protect the environment."
