Young Roots quartet Tim Loydell and the Deckchairs are back in Maleny on 24 July with a bag full of new songs and a special guest -- singer/songwriter Mick Hart.
Hart was nominated for a 2002 ARIA award for Blues and Roots Album of the Year. Tim Loydell and the Deckchairs have been setting venues alight across the country with their sheer dynamic power. They recently supported the launch of Mick Hart's sixth studio album, "What Lies Beneath", on the Gold Coast several months ago. The two bands have joined forces for the east coast side of Hart's National Tour.
Tim Loydell and the Deckchairs create an intricate, studied yet powerful sound overflowing with genre but steeped in technique. They are both a throwback to another time and the shape of things to come. They encourage the listener to celebrate, contemplate and investigate life through music.
According to singer/songwriter Tim Loydell, "Music is a language -- a truly amazing aspect of human nature. For us, the love of music has opened many doors and closed none."
Loydell's lyrics travel through emotions, impressions, allusions and beauty. There are lessons in his tales and he tells them well -- it is impossible to remain unmoved by his songs.
These visions take flight on the wings of his band. The group features Loydell on 6 and 12 string guitars. Tim is accompanied by Josh Catt on lap slide. The sweet, mournful strains of Catt's style personify the best qualities of the instrument, reuniting the listener with another time, another era. Together, Tim and Josh paint a stunning picture. The timbre of the 12 string becomes entwined by the slender tones of the lap slide. It is a beautiful combination that revives the weary ears of guitar lovers. They dive and soar, and it is a passionate ride.
Tim and Josh can dive and soar all they like, for the good ship Deckchair is on a steady course. Like the legendary rhythm sections before them, bassist Alex Mitchell and drummer Joe Brisick are all business. It is hard not to be impressed by the prodigious talent of these two. Their dynamic qualities frame the songs, give them power and add wings to the emotions of the band. Joe has an impressive mastery of a number of styles and brings a fresh hearing to each one. Alex lays down a huge bottom end, yet he is there whenever the mood changes.
Tim Loydell and the Deckchairs possess a weather-worn patina that defies their youth. They bring to mind great bands that came before them. Do not miss this rare performance.
