Second round of port meetings underway

A second round of port visits for commercial fishers to discuss proposed changes to licensing and fee arrangements in Queensland is underway.

Acting Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Chris Cummins said Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) officers were carrying out port meetings throughout the State to discuss the proposed changes to fisheries licensing and fee arrangements detailed in a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) released for public comment in May this year.

The meetings are aimed at the commercial sector and the meetings are expected to address a range of issues which were raised during the first round of port visits held earlier this year.

"The goal is to find an approach which streamlines licensing and fee arrangements while also keeping charges considerably lower than other states while also minimising the impact of any fee increases on our Queensland fisheries," Mr Cummins said.

Mr Cummins again confirmed that the Government has no plans for a recreational fishing license in Queensland, despite claims to the contrary by the Queensland Fishing Party.

"During the first round of meetings Departmental officers strongly emphasised that this was not Government policy and that no recommendation would be made to Government with regard to implementing a recreational fishing license in the foreseeable future."

Details of the outcomes of the previous port meetings and information on the current round of port visits can be found on the DPI&F Fishweb site at
