An unruly mind is not only the cause of our own difficulties and suffering but also an obstacle to kindness and compassion. Unwanted distractions undermine our attempts to develop the wisdom and compassion necessary to achieve our potential and benefit those around us.

Shamatha practice pacifies those distractions leaving the mind calm, clear and flexible. H.H the Dalai Lama has regularly said that he would like to spend more time on Shamatha (calm abiding), and in his 2011 visit to Chenrezig Institute, he encouraged us to do the same.

With this in mind, we are delighted to host Alan Wallace for a full-day teaching on the development of Shamatha as a support for method and wisdom. This is a rare opportunity to hear a teacher who is in demand the world over and to be guided in an intellectual and experiential approach toward cultivating high levels of concentration.

Saturday 20th August 10 am to 4:30 pm, held in the Gompa, Chenrezig Institute. Facility Fee $95 10% discount for members and concession card holders. No further discounts in the way of vouchers or redemption's accepted for this retreat. Accommodation and meals available separately. Meals must be booked before 10 am on the day of the event.

Dynamic lecturer, progressive scholar, and one of the most prolific writers and translators of Tibetan Buddhism in the West, B. Alan Wallace, PhD., continually seeks innovative ways to integrate Buddhist contemplative practices with Western science to advance the study of the mind. Dr. Wallace, a scholar and practitioner of Buddhism since 1970, has taught Buddhist theory and meditation worldwide since 1976.

Having devoted fourteen years to training as a Tibetan Buddhist monk, ordained by H. H. the Dalai Lama, he went on to earn an undergraduate degree in physics and the philosophy of science at Amherst College and a doctorate in religious studies at Stanford. With his unique background, Alan brings deep experience and applied skills to the challenge of integrating traditional Indo-Tibetan Buddhism with the modern world.

Established 1974, Chenrezig Institute is a centre for Buddhist study, meditation, retreat and practice nestled in the foothills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The Institute is home to a Tibetan Geshe (Lama), a large community of ordained Sangha (monks and nuns), students, residents, volunteers, retreat goers and guests. Apart from the formal study programmes, Chenrezig Institute is a peaceful, calm and relaxing place to spend a few hours, days or weeks. Stroll along the bush paths, wander in formal garden, espresso in the cafe or a vegetarian meal. Teachers' availability subject to change; please refer for updated information.
