Tuesday 1 November 2005  Special displays at City Libraries to mark Remembrance Day

Caloundra City Libraries will host a special display to mark Remembrance Day next Friday 11 November.

Caloundra City Mayor Don Aldous said the Libraries have secured two Memorial Boxes, on loan from the Australian War Museum, which go on display at the Kawana and Caloundra branches from Monday.

The boxes have been developed as a community resource and contain rare collected items such as photographs, medals, uniforms, oral histories and videos.

Caloundra Library will host 'Australia in the First World War'. This box tells of the experience of Australians at war at Gallipoli, in the Middle East, and on the Western Front. It looks at the plight of soldiers, including those who were injured, captured or died. The role of nurses and the Red Cross is also considered.

On the home front, issues such as the conscription debate, and the repatriation of soldiers are considered, as well as the sense of longing and loss experienced by both those who went away and their loved ones who waited at home.

'Australia Under Attack' will be on display at Kawana Library. Australia came under direct attack in the Second World War, and this box looks at some of the major events of that time, including the midget submarine attack at Sydney Harbour, the bombing of Darwin and attacks on merchant shipping.

The wider impact of war on Australian life is also discussed - separation, civil defence, rationing, the austerity campaign, evacuation, and the social effects of the influx of thousands of American defence personnel.

"This is a rare opportunity for insight into what remains an integral part of our nation's history while commemorating an important occasion to mark the anniversary of the end of World War One," Cr Aldous said.

The memorial boxes will be on display at the Caloundra and Kawana Libraries from Monday 7 November until Friday 18 November.
