Born and raised in Western Queensland, Elizabeth Poole maintains strong links with the Australian bush in her art, and has worked and exhibited continuously throughout years of family and business commitments.

In her work there is ongoing exploration, which has evolved from Cezanne and cubist based training at the National Art School of East Sydney Tech, where she studied from 1962 - 1964.   Painting in oils and acrylics and much drawing has largely given way to sculpture derived from combining a variety of man-made materials with natural elements collected from the bush and lake where Elizabeth lives and works.

Commenting on the spiritus mundi (spirit of the earth or world) collection, Elizabeth says - " One's immediate environment is the strongest reality.  Where I live is very soft and fragile Wallum bushland and in it I see small, joyful spiritii which are imaginary symbols, dancing and flying, moving to their own and the earth's rhythms.  The spiritii are fantasy, optimism, light, air and joy of life.  But just as day is edged by night, and a flower emerges from the dark earth, so the ephemeral dance of life is preceded by and then absorbed back into the unknown."

" For many years in my work I have been investigating (quoting D.H.Lawrence ) "......the Australian underdark, that peculiar lost, weary aloofness..." This, for me, is metaphor for life and the battles we face within ourselves, which I feel have to be acknowledged and appreciated as part of the whole.  Making the spiritus mundi was like something bursting from the darkness, and also reminded me of the magic of childhood play where one is totally absorbed and concentrated without any really conscious thought of the outcome.  Only the process is real."
