One of the Australia’s finest experimental winemakers, Geoff Merrill will share stories about his craft at a wine degustation dinner at Noosa Springs Thursday 3 September. Five delicious courses with matching wines from Mount Hurtle Winery, McLaren Vale SA.
The Geoff Merrill label launched in 1983 and a couple of years later, Geoff began restoration of the beautiful but run down Mount Hurtle Winery, which today is a heritage listed Tuscan-style dwelling and a vineyard populated with ducks, geese and swans. In 1993 Geoff embarked on an exciting new winemaking phase as a consultant winemaker in Italy to UK supermarket Sainsbury and the Italian Gruppo Italiano Vini.
Geoff’s philosophy is to make wine that allows regional, varietal and vintage expression without winemaker intervention. Accolades include the prestigious Jimmy Watson trophy for the Geoff Merrill Reserve Shiraz 2004 vintage and winner best one-year-old red wine in The Great Australian Shiraz Challenge with his 2002 Reserve Shiraz. This year his 2008 McLaren Vale Henley Shiraz won best six-year-old red at the Peel Estate’s Annual Great Shiraz Tasting pipping other iconic Australian wines Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace to the post.
Come and taste some truly amazing wines: Wickham Park Sauvignon Blanc, Reserve Selection Chardonnay, Jacko’s Blend Shiraz, Pimpala Vineyard Cabernet Merlot and Reserve Selection Cabernet Sauvignon perfectly matched to each course.
