Senator Lazarus to speak at the Stop the Maroochy Sand Mine Community Forum
Senator for Queensland and Leader of the Glenn Lazarus Team, Glenn Lazarus will attend and speak at a Community Forum hosted by the Stop the Maroochy Sand Mine group on Monday, 30 May at Diddillibah Hall from 7pm. Senator Lazarus was first alerted to the issue when the group contacted him via his Facebook page.
"The Stop the Maroochy Sand Mine group is doing a fantastic job of raising awareness of the devastating and significant effects of the proposed sand mine," Senator Glenn Lazarus said today.
"This sand mine will have effects right across the community of Maroochydore.
"The mine will have an impact on the environment, the health of residents, traffic congestion, local schools, tourism, property values and cultural heritage.
"The people of Maroochydore are reaching out for support and I am keen to support them.
"Already thousands of people across the Sunshine Coast are involved in the opposition group and this number is growing.
"It is clear the Sunshine Coast community does not want a sand extraction mine in the middle of their community.
"According to Scott Sawyer of the Sunshine Coast daily, the controversial Forest Glen sand mine proposal from Maroochydore Sands Pty Ltd appears set to come before the Sunshine Coast Council on either July 21 or August 18, 2016.
"Governments need to start listening to the views of the people and if they don't listen, we have to make them.
"I hope my involvement and support of the group will assist to raise awareness of the community's opposition to the mine and give them a greater voice."
