The Sunshine Coast Art Prize is proving its staying power and commitment to contemporary Australian artists. Last year's winner Scott Redford has also been included as part of a new triennial exhibition series at the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane.

Sunshine Coast Art Prize News:

28 May 2009 Final 40 selected for art prize

Local artists are among the 40 finalists selected from a field of 400 entries vying to win the 2009 Sunshine Coast Art Prize.

The Sunshine Coast Art Prize (SCAP) is a national contemporary painting and 2D art prize presented by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

In the lead-up to the winner being announced on 27 August, Caloundra Regional Art Gallery is hosting a free exhibition of the 40 finalists' work from 19 August to 4 October.

Some of the Sunshine Coast's finest artists are amongst the 40 finalists. Peter Hudson from Maleny is again represented, as well as fellow artists Joanne Currie Nalingu of Caloundra and Lisa Lee of Tewantin.

Community Policy and Programs portfolio holder Councillor Jenny McKay said the exhibit would display some of the best contemporary art on offer in Australia.

"With over 400 entries received from around the country, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize has again pushed the boundaries for contemporary art locally and nationally," Cr McKay said.

"The top 40 pieces of work for the prize will be on show at the free exhibition and I encourage residents to visit the gallery and see the artworks for themselves."

The SCAP winner will receive a $20,000 prize which includes cash and an artists-in-residency prize in Maleny.

This year's judge is acclaimed gallery director and philanthropist Philip Bacon, who established the Philip Bacon Galleries in Brisbane in 1974. The gallery is now regarded as Brisbane's leading commercial art gallery.

The SCAP exhibition will run at Caloundra Regional Art Gallery from 19 August to 4 October between 10am and 4pm. Admission is free.

As with previous years, SCAP will offer a dynamic program of public events with the aim of encouraging all walks of life to enter the gallery to enjoy and be challenged by the work on display.

As an acquisitive prize, SCAP will build a significant art collection over time for the Sunshine Coast.
