More than 170 people to join the Coast's Australian family on Australia Day 2010

More than 170 people will become Australian citizens on 26 January during an Australia Day ceremony hosted by the Sunshine Coast Council at Noosaville Lions Park, Tewantin.

The new Sunshine Coast Australians are among some 16,000 people who will become citizens at more than 300 ceremonies right across the nation.

Mayor Bob Abbot said he was looking forward to welcoming the new citizens into the Coast's Australian family.

"Australia Day is an opportunity for all of us to take pride in our citizenship and reflect on the meaning and importance of being Australian," Cr Abbot said.
"In the past year, the region has had about 1140 people become Australian Citizens.

"These newest citizens come from a number of different countries including the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Republic of South Africa and Canada.

"They may have been residents for varying lengths of time but all have now made the decision to permanently call Australia home.

"Our nation has always been enriched by the cultures and traditions of its new citizens and I'm sure these latest additions will contribute to our rich cultural diversity and help shape our country's future."

The Holmes family, from Buderim, is one family who will become citizens at the Tewantin ceremony.

They have lived in Australia for three years, and are very excited to become citizens as the whole nation celebrates.

The ceremony will commence at 9am, followed by entertainment, food stalls, jumping castle and children's games.

All are welcome to join in the celebration with our new citizens.
