The Sunshine Coast celebrates "National Water Week"

National Water Week (NWW) was first held in 1993 and has the theme each year 'Water for Life'. In 2008, it runs from 19 to 26 October. It is a time to reflect on the important role water plays in our lives.

Mayor Bob Abbot said clean water is essential to life, yet people around the world die every day because they can't access it.

"In this the United Nations' International Year of Sanitation, we are reminded how fortunate we are and how important it is to respect and utilise our water supply and wastewater services responsibly", Cr Abbot said.

"Sunshine Coast Water do a great job ensuring that our drinking water is of a very high standard, and that our wastewater is treated effectively, protecting the health of our waterways. But it is up to each and every one of us to save every drop we can".

Sunshine Coast Water Director Judy Bailey said providing water education is an important step in changing attitudes for long-term sustainable behaviour.

"School visits by Council's Water Educators and guided treatment plant tours have been happening here for more than ten years.

"This helps our local community understand what is involved in providing safe, clean drinking-quality water at the turn of a tap and is reflected in the areas low water usage".

The students at Currimundi Community Kindergarten and Preschool are learning what makes water special and a visit from a Sunshine Coast Council Water Educator will provide specialist information and support for the students and their teachers.

"We have water efficient taps and toilets and also had a rainwater tank installed this year. We make sure the children know that water is not to be wasted", kindergarten co-director Sue Crabbe said.

Sunshine Coast Regional Council are also celebrating the week with a display at Sunshine Plaza that runs from Sunday 19 through to Wednesday 22 October. The display will be located adjacent to Police Beat and will provide free giveaways and information to help residents improve their water efficiency both inside and outside the home.
