This Australia Day will be kicked off with a world record attempt for the most people in a thong race here on the Sunshine Coast. After discovering that Austria holds the World Record involving our iconic Aussie thong, the Duporth Tavern became determined to bring the record home.
All ages are encouraged to get involved and help make history on our national day by beating the current record of 352 participants. The race will be run, walked, skipped and jogged over the 1km distance and the organisers from the Duporth Tavern remind everyone that they must wear a pair of thongs to participate in the record breaking attempt.
General Manager and local Surf Lifesaving Volunteer, Aaron Jensen says he is blown away that the record doesn’t already belong to Australia. “Mate, I think everyone on the coast should get involved and take back what is rightfully ours. What better day to do it than on Australia Day; show the mateship and social spirit on the coast”.
Over 500 participants are wanted for the record, and those looking to make history can register for the race by visiting the web page www.duporthtavern.com or calling 5443 1999. Everyone who registers before the day will receive a free sausage sizzle and there will be plenty of Australia Day events after the record attempt to keep everyone entertained. The race is set to kick off at 11am, but all participants are asked to be at 52 Duporth Avenue by 10am. The tavern is a family friendly venue and sporting groups, clubs and schools are welcome to get involved.
