Beach goers will have the opportunity to give back this weekend as volunteers gather to pay tribute to the beaches that so define the Sunshine Coast lifestyle.
The Sunshine Coast Surfrider Foundation will be encouraging surfers and attendees to help keep beaches clean during the 40th anniversary Pa and Ma Bendall surfing contest to be held at Moffat Beach over the Easter weekend.
The clean up aims to raise awareness in the community for the need to limit the damage caused by humans and to enable future generations to enjoy the natural spoils of our beloved coastline.
Sunshine Coast Surfrider President Craig Macintyre says it’s important for people to feel a sense of responsibility for maintaining the beaches and oceans we all gain so much enjoyment from.
“As surfers and beach goers we should all consider ourselves stewards of the sea and protectors of our marine environment”, Macintyre said.
“The increasing amount of plastics being swept into the ocean from storm drains and beaches is having a devastating effect on marine life, but we can reduce our impact with regular clean ups like the one we will be having this weekend”.
“We’re hoping lots of people will come along to have some fun on the day and really get involved in helping to keep our local beaches beautiful for today and our future generations”.
The clean up will officially run from 2:30 to 4:30 this Sunday and all volunteers will be provided with gloves and equipment as well as treated to a free BBQ afterwards.
