Surfing Mums Get Back in the Water
A new group of surfing mums is hitting the waters of the Northern Sunshine Coast…
Statistically, at least 90% of all women who surf will at some stage become a mother. Being a mother and a surfer yields its own unique set of challenges.  Mums are committed to a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week job. There is no time to surf before a job or after, they can't jump in for a quick surf while the baby is asleep or sneak off while they are playing contentedly on the sand. The double drama is as a surfer they all tend to be beach people, so suddenly mums are down on the beach while the surf is perfect and can't go for a surf. Mums have so much more time than they did before and they can't use it to surf! By surfing we mean any sport in the water from body boarding, short boarding, long boarding or just body surfing!
Surfing mums have to come up with some creative ways to make sure they still get plenty of water time while still being full time careers of their children. They often have many friends who surf but don't have children; they need other surfing mums who understand their needs as a surfer and as a mum. They need a mum that wants to surf as much as they did before they had kids. A partnership that makes sure instead of the occasional surf, they surf everyday. Mothers who can swap 'beach sitting' times with the kids on the beach while one of them get to surf, and visa versa. So Surfing Mums was born!
Surfing Mums is a network of mums who surf that can call on each other during the week and set up beach sitting sessions with the kids. The groups meets once a week to make new friends and to get to know each other while the web page provides a space where meeting times can be posted and group news shared. Surfing Mums groups are now established in Byron Bay, Coolongatta, Currumbin on the Gold Coast, Cronulla, Manly, Bondi in Sydney, Avoca Beach on the East Coast, Perth and Albany on the West Coast of Australia and Mt Maunganui New Zealand, but the dream of the founder Vanessa Thompson is for there to be a Surfing Mums network in every place where mums surf.
The Northern Sunshine Coast Group for mums north of the Maroochy River is having it's Next Meeting: This Thursday at First Bay (Coolum) from 9am.  After that, we'll meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month! 9am-11am.  There is no membership fees, no fees at all and no obligation - just a bunch of mums getting together to surf.
