Fun in a nutshell

The hunt for Australia's best macadamia nut and most enduring gospel band is on during this year's NutFest at Beerwah Sports Ground on Saturday, October 8.

Hosted by Church on the Rise, the festival will include a Battle of the Bands competition where the last gospel band standing will collect a sought after recording prize worth over $4000. The prize includes one day's recording at Woodhead Studios, who have recorded country artists the Webb Brothers and Barry Chandler. The prize includes $1250 cash, and $500 for the band's youth group.

Aiming to showcase the importance of the macadamia industry to the region, the day will also see the crowning of Australia's top macadamia nut. The competition is looking to find Australia's highest quality macadamia in its shell, and is the first judging of its kind in Australia.

Another new attraction this year will be 70 market stalls full of goodies including local produce, sweets and other market treasures. Australia Zoo will have a display along with council, government and industry organisations.

Organiser Les Peel said this year's event will be the best yet with fun for the whole family.

"This years event offers a great opportunity to listen to good music while also enjoying and learning about the local produce that is so important to this region,"  Mr Peel said.

Attractions include afternoon rides for just $20, featuring the new Bungy Trampoline, a crèche, fashion parade, sweets and local produce food stalls, including macadamia nut ice cream.

The 2005 NutFest is a drug and alcohol free event and entry is a gold coin donation. Lucky door prizes including a wheelbarrow of goodies, donated by Wimberly's Mitre 10, and family passes to Australia Zoo will also be up for grabs.
