New York jazz pianist to sparkle at The J
Exceptionally talented New York jazz ensemble 'The Aaron Goldberg Trio' will perform at The J in Noosa on Saturday 14 June. Harvard graduate Aaron Goldberg is one of the most amazing jazz pianists of today with an amazing range of gifts: flawless technique, a deft touch, singing solos and a creative mind. In his own words: "It's an attempt to regard song from a globalist perspective, yet to approach other cultures with a creative NYC sensibility."
The pianist himself is a highly sought-after accompanist who's employed by an unusually broad range of bandleaders, from the tradition-minded Wynton Marsalis to Kurt Rosenwinkel and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner.
Now Aaron has managed to bring two of the worlds' best jazz musicians with him on tour: stylish young drummer Greg Hutchinson has recently toured in Australia with Diane Reeves and was described by Gary Giddins in JazzTimes to be "the greatest drummer of his generation". Bassist Reuben Rogers has enjoyed the opportunity of intense musical relationships with jazz artists of world-renown, such as Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Marcus Roberts, Jackie McLean, Wynton Marsalis and Dianne Reeves, amongst others. He has toured extensively all over the globe, and has recorded on over 60 CDs.
As an artist Goldberg has adopted the global and made it personal; he recognizes the harmony between national and international, past and future, history and progress. With his profound musicianship and global conception of jazz he always has an eye tuned to his sociopolitical environment and seems compelled to embrace great music whatever its source. The Chicago Sun Times sums his telepathic, bright young talent up: "Goldberg sparkled...delightfully conceived solos...a first-rate pianist."
His significant career as a performance artist and composer began with piano lessons at the age of seven. Later in high school Goldberg became hooked on jazz as a result of two master educators, Bob Sinicope and saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi. In an interview with All About Jazz, Goldberg describes how the whole world of music opened up to him when he studied jazz in high school. Beforehand it was music, then there was jazz: "I started to feel an emotional connection to the music I was playing". Audiences will be in for a very special evening, with music full of personality and charisma: "It's about looking ahead and looking inside yourself to find out who you are. As long as you look inside yourself the music will continue to grow because people are changing" Aaron says.
The Aaron Goldberg Trio will perform at The J on Saturday 14 June from 8pm, with the bar opening at 7pm for pre show drinks. Tickets to this world class evening for every lover of music are available for $35 and $32 concessions from the website or phone 5455 4455.
"Boundless imagination, burning intensity, exquisite sensitivity and abundant soul—Aaron Goldberg truly has it all. One of the most exciting, inventive and lyrical pianists you will ever hear." Joshua Redman
"Aaron Goldberg is a modern improviser of great clarity, finesse and dexterity. He has a first-class technical command of the piano, a unique rhythmic sophistication, attention to the nuances of thematic development and a penetrating intellect." Wynton Marsalis
"A wonderful young pianist...Goldberg unleashed the first of a series of stunning improvisations that made listeners crane their necks to check him out. He was always trying to shift the music into fresh rhythmic and tonal territories."
- The Guardian (London)
"Goldberg makes music that feels as if it has been softened in the same way a rainy day softens shades of green, [yet] its rhythmic vibrancy is consistently compelling. Goldberg played exquisitely…exultant revelry…this was a night to live in the memory.
