CONCERT PIANIST SURPRISE HIT AT MAJOR COMEDY FESTIVAL
The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is widely regarded as one of the world’s major comedy festivals. So you don’t go there to hear a concert pianist, right? Wrong. The Melbourne Recital Centre is Australia’s premier classical music venue. So you don’t go there to see a stand-up comedian, right? Wrong again!
This is where David Scheel is unique. For some 20 years he has been sending up classical and not-so-classical music, and giving audiences such a side-splittingly funny take on music that it’s small wonder that all his Melbourne Comedy Festival concerts, just ended, were completely sold out well in advance.
In a Scheel concert you will hear a well-known folk tune played in the styles of various old masters (plus an i-Pod!); or he will take a piece by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and another by Bach, and play one with one hand and the other with the other hand, at the same time. It’s no surprise that for most of his career, David Scheel has been regarded as the successor to the great Victor Borge. But there are differences. For one; when he starts to play a piece seriously, he actually finishes it, illustrating his true quality as a concert pianist of international calibre.
And then there are the accents; lots of them, all hilarious and pin-point accurate, so much so that for all those comparisons with Victor Borge, there have been even more with the likes of Robin Williams and Peter Ustinov.
Nor is Scheel’s comedy focussed solely on music. Whoever and whatever is making the news may be fair game, from Brittney Spears’ IQ to Sarah Palin’s DNA. And his send-ups of text message abbreviations, and classic translation of the lyrics of Waltzing Matilda are worth the admission price alone.
If you want to hear beautiful music, and laugh yourself silly at the same time, then do yourself a favour and go to a David Scheel concert.
David will be getting inside the head of the great masters, and even demonstrating how they composed their works in his brand new show, The Art of the Pianist-Composer, which he’ll perform at Noosa Arts Theatre on Sunday 7th August (2.00 p.m. & 7.30 p.m.) and Monday 8th (7.30 p.m.)
