Now in it’s 11th Year, the BRISBANE CABARET FESTIVAL will swing back onto the scene enticing us with a moveable feast of fascinating performers from Thursday 25th October – Sunday 11th November. Tickets are on sale now from www.brisbanecabaretfestival.com
Presented over three weeks, BCF saunters through the city seeking out intimate spaces, hidden gems, swinging juke joints, sexy salons and dazzling theatres. Some of Brisbane's best established and new cabaret venues including The Judith Wright Centre, The Old Museum, Tribal Theatre, Stockholm Syndrome, The Manhattan Club, Stagedoor, The Pink Piano, Emporium, The Hideaway and SYC Studios will come alive with over 40 cabaret events.
The 2012 festival program sees the long-awaited return of the famous and fabulous WOMEN IN VOICE, after four years in hiatus. Long-revered in Australia as a premium event bringing together an incredible array of voices and musical styles – all on the same stage at the Old Museum. Starring in WOMEN IN VOICE 19 will be Lil’Fi, Alison St Ledger, Leah Cotterell, Kacey Patrick and Lauren Lucille.
WOMEN IN VOICE’s Annie Peterson said, “It is the question I am asked every day…when is WIV coming back? And I’m so happy to be able to say - NOW”.
Comedy Cabaret abounds this year with Brisbane-loves-them-so-much-we’d-like-to adopt-them, comedy trio TRIPOD; intergalactic comedy stars Saturn Returns and anthemaniac Geraldine Quinn touching down; The Kransky Sisters making a home visit as do Jenny Wynter; and Megan Shorey will be taking the stage to flash her undies. We’re also very proud to welcome home erstwhile Alien of Extraordinary Ability - Courtney Act - with her jaw dropping gender illusion, stunning voice and wicked humour. Expat cabaret sensation Dusty Limits will make a stopover return visit from his second home in London.
Good old fashioned showbiz and classic cabaret will also be front and centre with Russell Fletcher’s Jest Like Danny Kaye, Marnie McQueen and Paris showgirl Shay Stafford. Pop tunes and Diva turns are on show with Cienda McNamara and Brisbane’s answer to Adele - Naomi Price. Retro madness ensues with Almaryse and The Frill of the Fight alongside Les Actes Terrible.
On the fringe front there’s the burlesque beauty of Red Devotchkin and Rosie Peaches in Red Roses and Babushka Cabaret get dark and delicious in Where the Wild Roses Grow. And it’s cabaret at twenty paces with Geppeto vs Astrid and the Asteroids.
Musically speaking, the 2012 program spans an incredible range of genres from contemporary singer songwriters Scott Spark and Brendan Maclean, French poetry and chanson with Projet.Prévert to Latin Milonga with Ruth Roshan and Tango Noir, and the breathtaking harmonies and sublime vocals of the The Lions Den will be unforgettable. The mix of Jazz cabaret is stunningly rendered by Melissa Western and Hannah Macklin, show tunes are twisted and teased by Rebecca Grennan in her new show Half Full, and it's double trouble when two of the country's mouthiest mama's Lil’ Fi and Mandy Nolan join forces for a cabaret feast of comedy and song at the festival club.
Brisbane Cabaret Festival has been inspired by the successful crowdfunding campaign of the recent Melbourne Cabaret Festival, so organisers have mounted their own crowdfunding campaign with Pozible.com ( pozible.com/brisbanecabaret2012 ). Those wanting to contribute can choose one of the rewards or just click on Support Project and “throw some money into the accordion case.” The Pozible campaign ends on 6th October.
As a good start to the campaign the festival has also received a boost with the Brisbane City Council giving them a helping hand through their Community Lifestyle program.
