THE DREAMING FESTIVAL OPENS DOORS TO WORLD INDIGENOUS CULTURE
Premier and Arts Minister Anna Bligh today 11 June welcomed the opening of the sixth festival of The Dreaming - Australia's International Indigenous Festival at Woodford.
"The Dreaming is a landmark festival, delivering one of the most comprehensive gatherings of Indigenous artists and presenters in Australia," the Premier said.
"This is a festival that was established with a true vision to showcase the depth and breadth of Australian Indigenous art.
"Along the way, it has exceeded this vision to become even more, an event where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are hosts to Indigenous people from across the world, in what is now a truly international event.
"More than 300 song men and women, custodians and performers will be expressing their language and culture through ceremony, music, dance, storytelling, weaving, painting and theatre.
"Performances range from the traditional to the latest contemporary works."
Ms Bligh said the Queensland Government has supported The Dreaming since its inception with funding of $240,000 for the 2010 festival.
"This year Queensland artists and performers will come from across the state: Mornington Island, the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Torres Strait, Cairns and Far North Queensland, and South East Queensland.
"I welcome Program Director Sam Cook on board in her inaugural year and commend her team, and that of the Queensland Folk Federation, for building The Dreaming into a festival of international stature," Ms Bligh said.
"I welcome performers from around the world to Queensland in this unique celebration of Indigenous culture."
The Dreaming runs from 11 - 14 June 2010 at the Woodfordia site. For further information: http://www.thedreamingfestival.com/
