The Festival of the Walks is a two-week long celebration over
Father's Day, 2009. The absolute beauty and charm of the Sunshine Coast
Hinterland offers visitors the opportunity to experience a magnificent
selection of rainforest and mountain walks, ranging from easy to
strenuous, from 20 minute strolls to walks of several days.
Experience some of the range's most scenic areas: warm subtropical rainforest, tall open eucalypt forest and picturesque waterfalls.
The area has many superb walks. Individual walks maps have been produced for the most popular walks. These are available at the local information centres or can be down loaded from the Maps section of this site.
The Individual walks maps provide the opportunity for visitors to the area to enjoy a self guided tour.
The maps highlight points of interest and other useful information. They are available free of charge!
Walking groups may be conducting guided walks in the area during the Festival. Visitors are encouraged to contact these groups direct if looking for a guided walk. Contact details appear on this site under the walking groups section.
The most extensive of the walks is the Great Walk which winds through the scenic Blackall Range, a cool retreat on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
The Blackall Range is about 90 kilometres north of Brisbane. It is one of Queensland's most dramatic hinterland areas. As you leave the highway and head up the range, enjoy views of mountains and valleys to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east.
The Maleny, Montville and Kenilworth townships and the villages of Flaxton & Mapleton provide unique shopping and a range of accommodation options from family motels to luxurious hinterland retreats, bed and breakfasts and caravan parks.
The Festival will also feature a music program with local artists performing during the weekends.
Details of the Music Walk which gives visitors the opportunity to stroll between the musical entertainment whilst enjoying the cafes, shops and galleries will be posted on the website.

[ D ] Kondalilla Falls Walks 2.4km to 4.6km - 45min to 2hrs return - From the car park to the picnic area and toilets is a steep concrete path-not wheelchair friendly. The walk to the top of the Falls-the Picnic Creek Circuit-is 2.4km, allow 45 minutes as the steps back up are quite steep. There is a natural pool and lush vegetation. The Kondalilla Falls Circuit descends to the valley below and up the other side-allow 1 hour-the return track is strenuous.
[ E ] Hinterland Great Walk - The start of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk. This 58km walk crosses the Maleny-Mapleton plateau and the Blackall Range. Towering Bunya Pines, rushing waterfalls and rugged, scarred landscapes are some of the natural wonders to be discovered. There are a number of walks from 2 to 7 hours. Most walks are not a circuit, you may need to arrange 'drop off' and 'pick up'. Sections of the Hinterland Great Walk are remote and isolated - be well prepared. The Park has some very large trees which attract a rich variety of birds. Many rare and threatened tree species flourish in this park and the endangered Coxen's Fig Parrot and Richmond Birdwing Butterfly have been seen.
[ H ] Obi Boardwalk 30 mins return - This delightful boardwalk illustrates the beginning of a longterm process of re-creating a sub tropical rainforest. Platypus may be seen! Enter opposite Bicentenary Lane - a superb rehabilitation project from Barung Landcare.
[ I ] Berganns Walk 20min - Easy Grade - The original footpath from Berganns Road to Witta Road. In early days it was used by school children. It passes in sight of Berganns private cemetery and the first Lutheran Church in the district.
[ J ] Tete Park - Tete Park next to Crystal Waters Eco Village offers a beautiful little public picnic area and kids playground on the banks of the Mary River.
