F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, published in 1925 is believed by many to be The Great American Novel, but filming this story of a mysteriously romantic millionaire who acquires a home across the water from the married woman he has loved for years, has proved a tricky proposition.
Jay Gatsby is one of literature’s most famously enigmatic figures and perhaps the greatest achievement of Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation is that the director penetrates the soul of this iconic character in a way that other adaptations have failed to do. Lurhmann understands Fitzgerald’s book and brings the writer’s classic prose to life on cinematic terms that feel thrilling, visceral, immediate and – largely due to Leonardo DiCaprio’s riveting turn as the titular character – haunting and humane.
